2.9 POSITION OF UMPIRES

Striker's end

The umpire should stand on the leg side in line with the popping crease about 22 yards (24 metres) from the wicket

Not too far back to judge runs, run outs or stumpings and not too close to impede fielders standing close to the wicket

It may be preferable to stand on the off side when
    fielders obstruct his view
the sun is low in the sky
there is a runner on the field for an injured batter
there may be a suspicion of too many fielders behind the popping crease on the leg side
If he changes sides, he must inform his colleague, the fielding captain and the striker
