2.9 POSITION OF UMPIRES

Bowler's end

The umpire must stand in a position where he can judge the position of the bowler's feet in the delivery stride and pick up the flight of the ball and he must be able to do these things without moving his head or body

Crouching should be avoided because it is tiring and the head has to be moved to pick up the flight of the ball

The bowler may ask the umpire to move from his chosen position, if this does not prevent the umpire from fulfilling his duties he should move

When the batters are running, the umpire will normally move to the side of the pitch to which the ball has been hit, however, some umpires find it better to move to the opposite side from the ball. This enables the umpire see the ball at all times and note the grounding of the bat by the batters

If he changes sides, he must inform his colleague, the fielding captain and the striker
