31.7 BATTER LEAVING HIS WICKET UNDER A MISAPPREHENSION

A batter may walk believing he has been fairly dismissed when in fact he has not been, for example the ball has struck him on the forearm and is 'caught' by a close fielder

When this happens the umpire must
call and signal Dead ball immediately to avoid any further action by the fielding side

recall the batter to continue his innings
The batter can be recalled any time before the ball comes into play for the next delivery, as a batter might well have left the field with a small boundary before the time that the umpires had discovered a problem with the ‘dismissal’

Should the batter fail to return the umpire must inform the scorers of this fact and to record the batter as Retired Out not Caught
