A run is defined as 'short' when
at least one of the batters

fails to ground his bat or person behind the popping crease at one end of the pitch
          and
then immediately turns to attempt another run
The next run is not shortened by this action

The striker batting in front of his popping crease is not penalised if he runs

If both batters run the same run short, only one run is disallowed

If the batters run short on different runs, more than one run will be declared short

The signal by an umpire is accompanied by a call 'Short run' when the ball is dead
