Opener, opening bat



An opener is one of the first two batters in the side.

While everyone hopes that the opening pair will produce a substantial partnership, they will have done part of their job if they can stay in long enough to force the opening bowlers, who are usually the quickest and most hostile, to take a rest

By this time, too, the initial shine and hardness of the ball should have started to wear off, making batting easier for the middle order batters who follow the openers. An opener is one of the first two batters in the side.

Opening batters are, of course, in a unique position to be able to report on the playing characteristics of the pitch to those who follow them in the batting order.
