Not playing a shot
Owner: D Jones

Indian batsman, Rohit Sharma was struck on the pad by England off-spinner Moeen Ali in the 13th over in the recent Test match, outside the line of off-stump but clearly not playing a shot, with his bat tucked well behind his pad

On-field umpire Virender Sharma disagreed, giving Rohit not out. England reviewed and 3rd umpire Anil Chaudhary seemingly paid little heed to whether or not Rohit had played a shot, confirming that the batsman had been struck outside the line and telling Sharma to stick with his decision

Ball tracking confirmed that the ball was hitting middle stump

Law 36.1 Out LBW uses 2 phrases that govern the above situation:-

on the off side of the striker’s wicket

if the striker has made no genuine attempt to play the ball with the bat

In this incident, the striker is clearly hiding his bat behind his pad and must be given Out LBW because he is not attempting to hit the ball
