Fake fielding

Steve Smith was batting in the 5th Ashes Test Match 2019 and running to make good his ground when he thought he was going to be run out on 26 by England wicket-keeper, Jonnie Bairstow

However, Bairstow did not have the ball in his hands when he "ran out" the diving Smith. The ball was held by Jofra Archer at the other end of the pitch

This is an example of Fake fielding that was outlawed by a recent rewrite of the Laws. The Law states that “it is unfair for any fielder wilfully to attempt, by word or action, to distract, deceive or obstruct either batsman after the striker has received the ball” and five penalty runs should be added to the opposition’s score if a team is found to indulge in “fake fielding”. The umpires did not react to the incident and did not award 5 penalty runs
