40.1 OUT TIMED OUT

If a new batter has not appeared after 3 minutes and there is no appeal, the delay is described as protracted and the umpires may consider that the batting side are refusing to play

The umpires should not allow the delay to continue much beyond 3 minutes before investigating the reason for the delay

The umpire at the bowler's end will call Time and both umpires will leave the field to investigate the delay

There cannot be an appeal because of the call and no batter can be dismissed

The investigation may result in the fielding side being awarded the match or play will resume
but only after the batting captain has had an opportunity to rectify the matter
