30.1 WHEN OUT OF HIS GROUND

If the ball is hit towards the boundary and the umpire moves to the same side, he will have his back to the ball

To see whether the ball has reached the boundary, he has to turn away from watching the batter running to his end

He may miss the batter not making good his ground and turning for a further run

Some umpires are now moving to the opposite side to where the ball is hit so that the ball is in their sight for the full incident
